Clash Royale Gameplay Basics & Tips
For those looking for an exciting strategy game that is fun yet challenging, Clash Royale is the game for you. Gameplay objective is simple, to out-duel your opponent and defeat their towers. The means of doing so is by using cards collected from chests you either win or purchase. Having the right strategy and using the correct card combination is key in this case.
The game is started with a beginner’s deck and an informative tutorial to help you get started. Each card or character available has a different and unique skillset. Understanding when and how many to use of each character ensures the level of success that you can achieve for each stage.
The first Clash Royale characters most often used are the knight, archers, bomber and giant. Each character takes a certain amount of “elixir” to use. The more powerful the character, the more elixir it takes to use. A knight for example, is fast moving, but is killed relatively easily. A giant, causing a lot of damage, but is slow moving and uses more elixir. This is where strategy comes into play. Using your giant after the first wave of your attack, preserves their health and they are able to reach the castles relatively unharmed.
After winning the tutorial match, you are granted a wooden chest and coins. Chests will be key in gaining more troops and winning unique unlockable characters within the game. The chest consists of small amount of gold coins which you can use to upgrade each character. These coins upgrade your cards to a higher level. This increases their hit points and damage, making them last longer against inferior opponents. The game allows you to upgrade characters in any way you see fit to fortify your battle deck. Choose carefully to ensure you are not too weak in one certain area while gameplay advances to more difficult levels.
The first set of enemies you will encounter besides the castles themselves launching bombs will be level 1 goblins. Goblins are relatively easy to kill, but come in groups of 3 per card. At the beginning stages of the game, many players choose to use bombers as well due to the fact they can kill multiple targets with one hit.
As you progress in the game, the cards get stronger and gameplay become more intense. The opponents become more of a challenge as well. Using a tactical deck becomes necessity in order to advance into higher arenas.
Another key strategy that is often over looked by first time game players is when to use overhead attacks as opposed to character attacks. In your initial battle deck, you are given the option to use two overhead attack methods. A fireball on a character(s) or castle which uses 4 elixir points, and an arrow attack. Arrows are slightly less effective, but at the same time only use 3 elixir points. A fireball attack is usually recommended for more powerful army, while the arrow attack can be more effective on a weaker army with small hitpoints. This is especially true when the opponents have already crossed over into your territory.
Using the map to your advantage is another key to productive gameplay. You have 3 towers that you must defend. There is one primary tower and two smaller towers next to it. If the primary tower is defeated, the others are automatically destroyed. Alternatively, the opponent also has the same set up with the same number of towers that you need to attack. The two territories are separated by a river, with two bridges being the only means of getting to the opposing side. Defending these areas are just as important as attacking the towers.
If all of the troops are on one side and attacking the other tower, this would leave the remaining bridge open and vulnerable for the opponent to attack your tower. If you used all of your elixir on cards to attack, you will have to wait for the elixir to regenerate before deploying more troops. In doing so, your opponent has free reign on attacking you unobstructed.
The multi-faceted approach to this game is one of the reasons it is so enjoyable to play. Many approaches work and are out there to use, so as you get further into the game, you can be selective in how you build your deck. As you win, you gain more crowns and other characters become available with more advanced chests that are accumulated. Deciding which characters to use in battle and against which opponent, is one of the most exciting facets of the game. In the end, You, the player have the ultimate control of how successful you are. I encourage each player to read about each characters skillset and have fun with the different combinations they can create! Good Luck and above all – have fun!
